  5. Thank you for purchasing StuffIt SpaceSaver from Aladdin Systems, Inc.

If you are installing SpaceSaver, and have a version of StuffIt Deluxe earlier than 3.0 installed on your hard disk, you should read the section below, "Upgrading to StuffIt SpaceSaver", before launching your new software.  Otherwise, we suggest you jump right into the section of the manual called, "Using SpaceSaver".

  9. Upgrading to StuffIt SpaceSaver from older versions of StuffIt
  10. ========================================================

For safety reasons, and to allow you to maintain full control of your files and folders, the StuffIt SpaceSaver Installer will not delete or move files or folders installed by other StuffIt Installers.  The following section describes the modifications you can make to fully upgrade to StuffIt SpaceSaver 1.0.2 and Magic Menu 3.0.3.  You may have some or all of these folders installed in the locations described.

  14. Don't worry if we instruct you to delete files that are not in the locations indicated.  This just means that the files were not installed by earlier versions of StuffIt.

  16. Help
  17. ----
  18. The "Help" folder can be found in the System Folder.  This folder is not used by StuffIt SpaceSaver 1.0.2 or by Magic Menu 3.0.3 (both of which are included in the StuffIt SpaceSaver package).  Open up the Help folder and delete the files called Magic Menu Help and UnStuffIt Deluxe Help.  If you don't have other Help files installed, you can delete the file called Online Documentation Toolkit™ as well.  If no other software vendors have placed files into the "Help" folder, you can delete the folder entirely.

  20. Extensions

  22. The "Extensions" folder can be found in the System Folder.  You can safely delete the files called "StuffIt Deluxe Extension" and "Mail Extension" located within this folder.

  24. Rebuild Your Desktop
  25. -------------------
  26. Now that you've installed StuffIt SpaceSaver, you should rebuild your desktop.  This process will insure that the new StuffIt icons are correctly displayed.  To rebuild your desktop, select restart from the menu called Special in the Finder.  Hold down the option and command keys (the command key has an apple and/or clover symbol on it and is usually placed next to the option keys).  Continue to hold these two keys down until you get a dialog asking you if you are sure you want to rebuild your desktop.  Click "Ok".  This process will take up to several minutes.  When it is finished, you can launch, and begin using, the StuffIt SpaceSaver control panel and Magic Menu finder extension.

  35. Known Issues
  36. -------------
  37. Unfortunately, it is not always possible for a company to ship a software product without some problems.  We believe that it is important that you are made aware of these problems now, rather than finding them at those inopportune moments.

  39. Disinfectant <= 2.9
  40. -----------------
  41. When scanning a file that has been compressed by SpaceSaver, you may see a warning that "the resource fork is damaged or in an unknown format".  This message will only appear for files that do not have resource forks, and can be safely ignored as it is a result of SpaceSaver's use of temporary files. John Norstad (author of Disinfectant) has fixed the problem and the next release of Disinfectant will include this fix.

  43. System 6 without MultiFinder
  44. ---------------------------
  45. If you are using System 6, but not running under MultiFinder, you will not be able to use the ".sit"/".sea" aspects of SpaceSaver due to memory limitations.  Magic Menu, however, works just fine and so you may use that method for working with archives in the Finder.

  48. Possible Conflicts & Workarounds
  49. ------------------------------
  50. We have found that older versions of some software can cause problems when used in conjuction with StuffIt SpaceSaver and/or Magic Menu.  Also, some software must load in a particular order if things are to function properly.  Here is a list of the conflicts that we know about and how to work around them.

  52. Desktop Manager
  53. ---------------
  54. If you are using the Desktop Manager INIT with System 6, you may find that you are unable to compress files with StuffIt SpaceSaver.  This is because the Desktop Manager INIT was designed for AppleShare 2.0 and as such makes all disks appear to the system as "remote disks".   Turn off the "Never Compress Files on Remote Disks" option in the SpaceSaver Control Panel to allow compression on your disks.

  56. Directory Assistance II
  57. ---------------------
  58. Version 2.0 of Directory Assistance II will not always show files that have been compressed by SpaceSaver in "Open" dialogs, since Directory Assistance II bypasses the Macintosh File System. Symantec has promised to fix this in their next update.  In the meantime, you can hold down the option key when choosing "Open".

  60. FolderBolt
  61. ---------
  62. Versions of FolderBolt earlier than 1.0.2c will not work properly with StuffIt SpaceSaver.  Contact Kent Marsh Software for an update.

  64. VersaTerm
  65. ----------
  66. VersaTerm & VersaTerm Pro (3.6.2 and earlier) will crash when launched with StuffIt SpaceSaver running.  Contact Synergy Systems for an update.

  68. Virex
  69. -----
  70. Virex (3.8.2 and earlier) can cause your Macintosh to lock up when the Finder is trying to load.  You may also find that even if you get past the Finder that you may have problems in other applications.  Contact Microcom for an update to Virex 3.8.3, which is fully compatible with StuffIt SpaceSaver.

  72. Adobe Type Manager
  73. ------------------
  74. If you are using System 6 and the Adobe Type Manager (ATM), we suggest that you rename Magic Menu to ~Magic Menu so that it will load following ATM.  This will prevent the situation where Magic Menu will only show it's "About" item, and nothing else.

  76. CEToolbox
  77. ---------
  78. You will need to configure SpaceSaver to load after CEToolbox in order to use them both. You can also use an extensions manager to change the loading order without changing their names.

  80. MasterJuggler
  81. -------------
  82. If you are using System 7, then this needs to load before Magic Menu, or you may get "Get Info" windows when using Magic Menu.  Normally it would load first, but if you are using an extensions manager to reorder extensions, this may not be the case.

  84. WYSIWYG Menus
  85. --------------
  86. You will need to rename WYSIWYG Menus to load before Magic Menu in order to use them both.  You can also use an extensions manager to change the loading order without changing their names.

  88. After Dark 2.0
  89. -------------
  90. We recommend that you enable the "System IQ" feature of After Dark when using it in conjunction with SpaceSaver.  This will help them to work better together.
